Determination of Erucic Acid

Erucic Acid is a 22 carbon monounsaturated fatty acid. It is found in the seeds of many plants such as rapeseed and mustard. However, in some tests on animals, erucic acid has been found to be highly toxic.

For this reason, an alternative was sought and canola oil, which does not contain erucic acid, was obtained. The amount of erucic acid in oils and in foods with more than 5% fat added is limited by the Turkish Food Codex.
Rapeseed is classified according to the amount of erucic acid it contains:

- "High Erucic Acid Rapeseed (HEAR)" if it contains 45% - 60%
- “Medium Erucic Acid Rapeseed” if it contains 35% - 40%
- “Low Erucic Acid Rapeseed” if it contains 0.03%

"Erusic Acid Determination" is carried out in our laboratories in accordance with the legal regulations and standards related to TÜRKAK accreditation.
